A slight leak somewhere on your car can go unnoticed for quite some time, and most of the time, if it's not too serious. There is an exception - when there is a whole puddle under your vehicle or, in the worst case, more than one. This blog will uncover the reasons and the different types of fluid spills your car might have.
1. Clear and Odorless
If you spot a clear and odorless puddle, especially after running your car's air conditioning system, don't worry. This is likely just condensation from the A/C evaporator, which is a normal occurrence and nothing to be concerned about.
Important: If your car's cooling system runs only on water, make sure to have it inspected for leaks because it might be leaking the aforementioned water.
2. Green or Light Green
A green or light green puddle is typically caused by a leak in your car's cooling system, often due to a damaged or worn-out radiator or a leaking coolant hose. Coolant, also known as antifreeze, helps regulate your engine's temperature, and a leak in this system can lead to engine overheating and potential damage if not addressed promptly.
If you don't know the color of your coolant, check it by dipping a straw into the radiator cap - if the color matches the puddle, you have a problem!
3. Pink or Red
A pink or red puddle indicates a leak in the transmission system. Transmission fluid is generally red in color, and if you notice a leak, it could be due to a worn-out gasket, a damaged transmission pan, or a faulty seal. Driving with a transmission fluid leak can cause severe damage to your vehicle's transmission, so it's crucial to have it checked and repaired by a professional as soon as possible.
4. Brown or Black
A brown or black puddle may indicate an engine oil leak. Engine oil is essential for lubricating and protecting your engine's moving parts, and a leak could result from a damaged oil pan, a faulty gasket, or a worn-out seal. Ignoring an engine oil leak can lead to engine damage and a decrease in overall performance, so it's essential to have it inspected and fixed promptly.
5. Light Brown or Yellow, Oily Substance
A light brown or yellow puddle may be caused by a leak in your car's brake system. Brake fluid is typically light brown or yellowish in color, and a leak in this system can compromise your car's braking performance, leading to potential safety risks. If you notice a brake fluid leak, head straight to the repair shop ASAP - also consider calling towing services just to be safe!
